Good Charlotte Digi Pack
I decided to have a look at the Good Charlotte digi pack, Morning Revival - Good Charlotte are a better known alternative rock band for their song Life of the Rich and Famous which was famously exampled on MTV and Kerrang for some time (which isn't on this album, but this is one of the most popular and my favourite from the band). What's really cool about the CD cover / digi pack is the incooperated colours, its all consistant and offers juxtaposistion, whilst orange is a normally brighter and more bold colour than the conventional black on white, it still holds the same idea. The inside digi pack actually folds out (if you can tell) instead of a booklet, one side having a huge fold out piece of the band and the other side pieces of lyrics with white on orange background. What's really cool and interesting (and I guess intresting) thing about this CD and digi pack is the photography, it's not artistic but its hugely dependent on the image of the band as well, it keeps that sense of iconography really.

Interesting - Linkin Park

I just thought this website was interesting, its the interactive facebook coordinated music video from Linkin Park's, 'lost in the echo' which I thought was really effective because it influences their audience to engage with their music, the video and brings it on a more personal level too.

Genre Research / Video Pitch

Above are our typically inspirations for our music video, our video (at present time) will be an alternative rock music video (though this is a vauage genre, rock/metal carry across the same conventions between each other) we looked at some great icons Linkin Park, Sum 41, Oasis, as well as some lesser known bands such as Cake and The Damned Things, making it worth while to look for bands that go out full for iconography and those that wish to keep a sense of artist integrity.
What we learnt from alternative music videos is the split between live performance and narrative, and because its so heavy and in every video we've looked at, we decided that it has to be included. Typically, we want to include it because it's that type of genre that relies on its audience feedback to keep going, its that type with the immense atmosphere that they want to carry between live performance and their fans - they want them to be involved.
In the next couple of days, I will look at a music video (or few) to find the average percentage of what part of the video is live performance and narrative - at the moment, I'm guessing narrative 40% and live performance 60%, though I'll conduct this research so we have a rough idea.
Location. We're going all out urban if we can, streets, stores - random locations even, populated, metro centre and then an isolated centre for the live performance with a party of some sort. We're not sure yet because we haven't storyboarded / planned, but we have an idea of what the locations should look like - the only music video I've looked at that doesn't have an urban location is Linkin Park's The Catalyst, though even the destructed buildings would still give a hint to that urban feel. On that note, mise-en-scene is more or less straight forward; band members normally have very simple, urban skate-kid clothing, like above or even other band t-shirts and jeans (well apart from Cake, but they're more stylised funky-alternative rock). Even All Time Low in their music video Time Bomb had a t-shirt that said 'no regrets' getting the message of the song further along to the audience. It's basic black on white clothing, because that's the icon of this genre.
- combining all of this together, what would be pretty intense would be something like Jimmy Eat World's video, The Middle (not the naked part, but the basic teenage look; the fashion that everyone kinda looks the same), the party atmosphere, the slow motion shots, the close up shots and the quick editing, altogether there's a lot of stylized elements going on with the video.
So above are the basic themes of our genre. Isolation, parties, revolution, freedom and glorification of the typical 'sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll' are the typical themes expereienced and experimented in music videos, which takes on an artistic approach or the attempt to relate further with audiences. Themes often aren't taken in singular stroll, they're often combined to approach something - like a journey, from isolation to party; again referencing to Jimmy Eat World's The Middle.

Just as everything else, album covers are often stylized too; they take on, in this genre, a very artistic approach. Whilst photos are often used to explore something, a message often, within the album, art is also used in the same method. Most of the time, covers are stark, contrasting, black and white, as though a metaphor for looking past the grey that bands sometimes approach about in their songs. Sum 41's is one of the oldest here, and typically (though more pre-decade) album covers often host pictures of the band members - even Linkin Park do it, though this is widely unknown but to fans.
I have yet to scan in some digi packs.

Album
Album
Single
Im a big Linkin Park fan and personally this is one of my favourite album covers because of its unique design on the front. The single was firstly a suprise when it was released, though you can see the dynamic links between the single cover and the album cover - its almost like the single cover is the end result of the peeling away that seems apparent in the album. It's really interesting how these covers were made however, I watch LPTV and saw the production of their covers, which they'd only completed the night before it was going to release on iTunes, they decided to use some of the 3D imaging they had taken for their music video waiting for the end to come where 3D imaging was used to produce the video - so already, off of and between the album, it uses the same techinques but produces the same sort of image.
What's particularly effect about Linkin Park's covers is the clear indication of their name - the font of their logo has never changed though colour and composistion has, though its clear across the top in the single, it isn't quite in the album - but what other album has a realistic peeling image? It's branding effectively in itself, its alternative and indie - its what the music is. The white covers contrast the grey CD greatly, and all of it feels roomy, yet comfortable when you view it such as the CD and the back of the cover with the song listings. It continues this sense of revolution because its so different, which reflects the imagery from the album also.

Software
Last year I used adobe premier elements 4 due to its simple, yet controllable use if you knew how to use it well enough (in addition with adobe after effects). This year I am going to be using adobe premier elements 10 which I have just bought recently and installed this morning; already, I'm pointing out effects that will be useful such as different ranges of colour correction (seeing as I've just recently learned about white balance and exposure particularly from NS), strobe lighting (which I had talked about in an idea) and a stabilizer function to stop images from shaking so much. I've got play around with them, but the software already seems much faster. In this package also, I got photoshop elements10, which will help me later when creating the digital packages next year.
I thought this effect was pretty cool, which I'd tried on a few seconds of the behind the scenes video for the damned things, it gives this comic effect which also appeared a possible idea.
In the mean time, I am concerned about what is happening to my group. I'm aware that Barry had dropped media, though I haven't seen Reece and he is not staying in contact with me, meaning I don't know if I'm working with him or alone for this project.

Interesting Video
Plan of action
So this is basically my plan of action for the next few weeks or basically the end of this half term. I realise that I've more or less completed my research - though, there's always room to look into more stuff briefly later on, such as specific styles of shots or examples of narrative and audience. My personal (not group target) is to finish shooting by the end of this half term, this gives me about 7 weeks which can be easily divided up. For a rough plan for now, this will mean that planning will have to be completed, a narrative written, storyboard, possible live action storyboard, actors, locations and props will have to be planned over the coming weeks. Given the time it took us to shoot DECIPHER, my AS project from last year, we gave ourselves 2 weeks to film and we had more then plenty of footage, so we can work on a similar time scale, if not a bit bigger as we're aware we're probably using more locations. This means weeks 1-3 can be spent planning, gathering what we need and finding prime locations and getting images of them to work with, as well as drawing the storyboard and producing a production list. This would leave us weeks 4-7 to film before blackberry week; if we don't meet this deadline, we'd have to extent over the half term holidays as I am in a residential camp with the northern stars film academy for the week - viseversa, this also limits the time we have each week as I am there every Saturday also.
These are just my personal ambitions, but with my group, we'll talk this through and create a production time scale and see how close we can stick to it, last year we were dead on and often finished before our deadlines due to organisation.
Whilst we will also have to think how we're going to in cooperate the themes of our music video into digital packages and a magazine, we can also consider the effects of branding whilst creating a music video. For an alternative rock music video, branding can be achieved rather simply due to the general conventional styles, but mise-en-scene can also be in-cooperated in the same way with the use of band clothing to give it that extra push. I already had a quick look at some CD covers, and I pointed out the illustration that seems pretty influential in the genre group - this in relation to the music video can be achieved simply as a single or album by the use of similar colours to the music video (particularly as I was having some ideas of having it quite stylized) or with similar images to what's displayed in the video. Alternatively, during live performance or the audience/party scenes of the video, we can also take some images and see what we can do digitally to them. It's the basics of continuously considering audience whilst we make the video more will allow us to easily translate this into stills and style for the product side of things.
What's rather prominent to me however is the challenge. I want a challenge from this project, I want to push myself further and see what I can do visually as a camera operator or even editor as that's the area I'm mostly interested in - I want to explore what I can do and push myself to improve from last year and create something that's unique; that's why I've been considering creating a stylized video. I think from last year a lot of the shots were okay, but I want to refine the type of shots and the quality of them also, but have not a generic narrative, but one that twists and turns and explores, something that isn't expected really.
Already in comparison to the work I produced last year, I feel my research is a lot stronger as I constantly become aware of audience reception which is something that I'll have to in-cooperate into my work more this year, I don't think I really considered audience whilst creating the introduction last year, we didn't do audience tests and I think because of the genre we've chosen this year (alternative rock) its spear headed a lot towards my age group, which is prime for sixthform. It wouldn't take long to run around sixthform with a video camera showing people rough cuts, though thoughts on idea conception can be hard as I think people need to visually see something first for there full response.
This year, I'm more aware that I'll have to be more considerate about technical areas and how narrative, representation and audience tie together and contionously have to consider what exactly I'm doing, how am I / have I used the cameras this year? Sound isn't a problem for the music video unless we decided to do a narrative break, so we can really focus on the visuals we're creating, and editing also comes into that mix, what can I teach myself to do that I didn't last year? Special effects seems possible, certaintly after exploring the dammned things as they had such basic yet great effects - so much so, I felt influenced by them! This also runs into creativity, like when I was exploring the possibilities of a UV or glow in the dark party for the live performance, but this will also certainly be apart of the narrative, how do we do something different?
I think all in all, I'm already beginning to improve subconciously as I always want a challange, I want something to drive me; my research work, I personally feel at least, is more in-depth and considerate of audience as well as a general conception of what I've analysed so far as compared to last year. Though my rough cut for counting crows was okay, it was also the first time I tackled a music video in a limited space of time, and I'm already trying to think of intersting places and locations instead of generic classrooms and generic narrative and themes.
Just for comparison later, these are some of my previous work from last year:

Showing some editing (even recording myself doing so) would just be something to show the process of work.

http://katiesawesomeasmediablog.blogspot.co.uk/2011/12/media-location.html
- this year I think we need more diverse locations, as this was the only one that wasn't in school, this of course, will promise complications such as availability, weather and time of day (this is why it will be better to shoot before the end of october before winter sets in)

- I think this year when we produce some rough cuts, its defiantly worth recording some reactions
